Building the World's Weirdest Fan

วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี

I'm in an experimental mood and thought I'd try building a modern bellows system! Will it work? Let's find out! Also, head to squarespace.com/diyperks to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using offer code PERKS

I hope you guys enjoyed this crazy build! It's been a wild journey trying to get this video released - firstly with the delays caused by the ideas that didn't work, and then ultimately by a HARD DRIVE FAILURE! Literally ALL the footage in this video was lost, and it was only thanks to some great data recovery fellows that you're seeing this at all. Backup system implemented now, fyi ;) because of these delays, this is actually quite an old video now (like 1 year) but I'm glad it's able to see the light of day as I think the final result is SUPER COOL! In hind sight I may not have started this project of perseverance, but it taught me such a lot in terms of which projects to make to show you guys and how experimental I can ultimately risk being. I know that basically none of you will make this, but the methodology ultimately settled upon is interesting and might have many more use cases. Either way it makes for interesting watching, so I hope you all enjoy it! ~Matt

A: Just needed to make it large so that it moves enough air to be useful. Ask away if you have any more questions :)

Why not reduce the outlet of the air into a smaller hose. That should theoretically pump out air with a lower temperature than the air that it is taking in making it somewhat of a noiseless AC thing. With increase in area of inlet and reduceing the outlet into a small circular aperture you may convert this into an air cooling device as well. Just try it.

Looks like I'm quite late on this one. I'm fairly new to the channel, so I hope it can be excused. Did anything ever come of this project? Wish I could afford to try some of the ideas I have now. What if you decreased the internal capacity, added some one-way valves and a couple of chambers to ensure the air being pulled enters from one side and the pushed air exits from the other? You'd be decreasing the surface area of the paddle, but be converting the device to a dual stroke system. I'm not sure if the results would be net positive or negative. Could this be powered by the water from a PC cooling system? Could the air exiting the bellows be focused somewhat on the radiator to further dissipate heat?

Those silent solenoid valves were actually a really cool concept, and they looks so damn cool! Like something out of a sci-fi movie. A shame they didn't work all that well cos of the water escaping through the wrong holes. Maybe there's a way to fix that? Some sort of material on each end of the magnet to stop water from escaping entirely? Might have to make the magnet a bit of a smaller diameter than the interior of the pipe tho, so you can get the material in and have it reliably work. Something fabric-like, maybe? Although ideally something that doesn't mold, or maybe that isn't a problem due to its lack of contact with the air? Idk, there's so much you could do with this valve, I'd love to see valves looking like this being more common!

I don't know if you've built a computer yet but placing radiators on both sides could work incredibly well for steam punk copper bronze cooling pipes to a remote open concept pc. If you utilize the air being pulled in as well as the exhaust you'll have 8 fans of liquid cooling that would cool an overclocked server. That would also look spectacular with LEDs lighting the glass and acrylic.

Just saw this, but you may be missing a key factor comparing this to 4 fans. This Replaces almost the entire volume of air ( HOT AIR) and fills the chamber with fresh air, fans do not/cannot replace the entire volume of air that fast, so this is more efficient even at slower speeds for complete airflow.

Electrical Engineer here, you could mathematically estimate your CFM (Cubic feet per minute) by measuring the volume of the box and the time it takes completely vacate that air from the box, then compare it to the CFM rating on the fans. Your magnetic linear actuator doesn't work because the step lengths don't match. You also should use a stepper motor driver rather than a signal generator albeit they are similar, stepper motor drivers are more applicable in your operation. My guess is the biggest obstacle for this project is generating enough force to move air to overcome the air pressure resistance.

  • TimTech

    TimTech

    5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@Bendigo well magnets and coils are interchangeable, coils offer more control, while magnets offer more efficiency and are self powered. there's a particular bit of math involved to calculate the magnetic flux, but once you figure it out, it's easy to do.

  • Bendigo

    Bendigo

    5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@TimTech I did not mean a linear atuator. It would be more of a long-stokr solenoid. the wire would be wrapped around a dowel, inside the tube in a coil running the length of the box. Each end of the coil would have a lead coming off the coil, connected to a circuit that would allow electricity to go through the coil and alternate the current direction. The magnets could be the ones he uses to make it move by the other magnet. it would be simmilar but opposite of his original idea where instead of the magnets in the tube and the coil on the outside, the magnets would be outside and the coil on the inside. Basically it would bo a linear electric motor, not a conventional linear actuator with gears. it would use the alternating electric current to push the magents back and forth.

  • TimTech

    TimTech

    5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@Bendigo if you think about a linear actuator as climbing a ladder, the rungs are the magnets and your arms are the magnetic field, if you space the rungs too far apart your arms won't reach if you space them to close to each other it will take you a long time to climb. If you put the coils inside the tube without stacking the magnets on the outside of the tube, it will be like climbing a ladder sideways. He was right to use a hydraulic system since a linear actuator doesn't have enough force without a gear box. It would've been fun if he went with non-standard fan designs like Teslas or Dysons designs. If me an engineer had to design a below regardless of the efficiency I would design a 3 chambered bellow with 6 valves and a non-concentrically shaft.

  • Bendigo

    Bendigo

    5 หลายเดือนก่อน

What about using the magnets on the outside and a long coil inside the tube? Adding current to the coil would move the magnets right? Just reverse the polarity of the current to move the panel back and forth. Am I wrong?
