Is the blue vinyl link in the video details meant to replace the silver one in order to avoid having to make the blue filter? If so, then this project got a whole lot easier.

Looking to fight winter depression in a region that's overcast 80% of the year... unfortunately I live in public housing ... a 10 by 10 foot cube with shared kitchen and restrooms ... meaning I don't have other rooms in my personal space just a pure cube. Thus I don't have the room to build this. I do have the financial discipline required to buy the materials over the course of a year or two but that won't matter if I don't have the space for it. Would love to implement this as a solution.

This is an awesome project for a basement room or any room that gets relatively little sunlight. I was ultra excited when I saw this and when I read the comments I decided this was gonna be a watch only video with no further action.

A wondeful project. I saw people making it with nano particles, but their solutions are way too expensive for me. Moreover, the size of this project is a bit too much for me, but in an attic that would make a wondeful living place. Thanks for sharing that !

Awesome video, very convincing sunlight for sure. What does the light feel like on your face? Does it have the same heating skin warming feel the sun gives? Or does it feel like a flashlight on your face, where you know its bright but don't feel any heat?

There's no infrared component so no, it wouldn't warm your face. On the flip side it wouldn't cause cancer either.

@DIY Perks - did I get that right that you are using stabilised (adjustable) voltage sources to power the LED groups? All LEDs that I know have negative dV/dT - when they warm up, current will increase if driven at a constant voltage, which could lead to thermal runaway. Shouldn't LEDs better be driven by constant CURRENT sources?

the emphasis is on "should" when talking about your lamp helping with seasonal affective disorder, as the more accurate qualifier is "maybe would". The commercial "sunlight" lamps prove only a fraction of their advertized affect, with them being generally regarded as mostly useless - but at least not harmful to try. Which is the only reason why they're still "recommended" by health professionals. The reason why those lamps do not really work isn't quite known, but it's probably due to them being - while very bright for an electric lamp - orders of magnitude dimmer then the sun (in the summer) and also lacking in the IR and UV spectrum.

It seems that in the end it would make more sense to use huge amount of small leds with lenses up on the ceiling. Maybe even make every assembly to rotate as time passes. And of course it should be dimmable. It probably wouldnt be the perfect imitation with proper shadows, but it would be more practical and still have this day light effect.

  • Harry Robins

Wow, this could be so useful for long filming shoots for continuity. It does make me think, could scientists have made this in the 60s? Not that I actually think the moon landing was fake but, this totally solves a problem with parralel shadows if it was hahaha.

I know of a process involving solutions of Sodium Citrate, Silver Nitrate, and Hydrogen Peroxidel, and adding in varying solutions of Sodium Bromide (depending on what colour you want) along with a diluted Sodium Borohydride solution will result in coloured Silver nanoparticles. You could dilute this resultant to fit the blue light. I learned this from chemistry laboratory. Idk to what extent this would be applicable but I thought I'd put it out there.

This is such an amazing find, thank you! I hope we will see this in the future in every house sooner then later. Would be nice if a company would pick this up and can mass produce it for a reasonable price (and maybe a tad smaller then your 1.2m? satellite). I am curious if a smaller LED would also be sufficiënt, so WC (water cooling) is not needed.
