I've had may folk ask if I hold the design copyright to this, so I'd just like to clarify that yes, I do. You'll need to get in touch if you intend to build from my design for commercial gain. Making one for yourself (or a couple of friends) is fine of course, and encouraged! Companies however can't steal my design for profit without prior arrangement... it's happened before 😄

I'm not so sure you can build it for $30 if you don't already have most of the materials already on hand. The usb interface is $18 and the capsule is $13+ shipping (if you can find one, ebay scalpers are getting $45-$75 since this video dropped). That's your $30 budget right there. Add in the rest of the parts and you are looking at about $120-130 before taxes and shipping from multiple sources. You'll have some parts and materials left over so you can do the math and deduct their value from the build. But if you're starting from scratch, you'll do good to make one for less than $150 out of pocket if you can manage to get the capsule for a fair price. I'd love to try building one myself but can't justify that much money on a diy project that I don't have 100% confidence I can complete to a level of quality I'd be happy with. I have complete faith that the project is amazing, I just don't have complete faith in my ability to execute the aesthetic details.

Out of curiosity, which parts of this microphone can be painted and how should I paint them? I would like it to match my setup but I’m not sure if spray painting the the mesh or similar parts (not the cable made of desoldering wire obv) can cause problems. Thanks!

So, here's the thing. It's cool and all, and for $30, great, but not everyone has tons of materials lying around. The whole parts list, not including capacitors, is right below this sentence. Mic capsule: $13 Transistor: $6 THAT1512 : $7.34 Audio capture: $18 Usb c breakouts: $9 7mm brass tube: $6.50 6mm brass rod: $10 3mm brass rod: $7 Nitrile rubber o rings: $7 Brass mesh: $15.50 15v+- isolator: $8.00 Brass sheet: ~$15 Rotary switch: $6.29 Dip ic sockets adaptor: $10.89 Jst-hx2.54 kut w/ crimps: $9.87 Enabled copper wire: $10.90 Strip board: $8.79 Desoldering wire 2mm 8 pack: $14.00 Hoping you have capacitors this should be it. Price without capacitors: $155.31 (WITHOUT SHIPPING) (These prices were estimated on multiple different platforms such as amazon, eBay, ect.) At this point, I would rather save the time and buy a mic instead. If you want to build it and pay $155, go right ahead. Anyways, i feel like the $30 for this was just baity and upsetting when you realize its gonna a cost almost ×5 more than you expected. Not really cool but oh well.

MAn! I've been wanting to do a project kind of like this and build a top tier vocal mic setup on the cheap, and I gotta say, you have convinced me to go forward with it! Your $30 mic held it's own with a Neuman87! Yours even seemed to have a bit more clarity on the high end! The Neuman had a bit more warmth in the mid lows, but it's so close for the price that it's astounding. A tweak here or there in the pre amp circuit could certainly shape the sound however one would want. Badass, sir. Badass.

I'm a big fan of all your projects. You've done some really interesting stuff! It's pretty amazing that you can make a mic that sounds as good as it does for so little in materials cost! and looks better than many of the ones you featured. I guess one of the cool things of this project is while the electronic/electrical components are necessary as they are you could really design the housing/apparatus to be pretty much whatever you want. Definitely really interested to see what people come up with

Audio engineer here - I record voiceovers daily with the original U87 (it's a little nicer than the AI) the real noticable difference between the two mics is that the custom mic has more harshness in the high end - it's a little more brittle sounding which once you apply compression and post production processing with result in more sibalance (loud s's). The U87 is also a little richer in nice low frequencies. but given that is a 30-40$ mic it's ludicrously good quallity and you could easily use it for proffessional purposes especially as a content creator as you don't need to process your voice as much for longer form videos. If you made this I wager you wouldn't be looking to replace it for quite a while. Looking at the alernatives in this price range people often jump to the blue yeti as an easy choice but I can say catagorically the blue yeti sounds absolutely awful compared to this wonderful build.
