The Canon EOS R5 has some serious overheating issues... let's fix it!

Here's the R5 in question: (yes, it was a bit nerve-racking opening such an expensive camera!)

Quick update! I've been doing more testing and if the camera is in single point autofocus (or manual focus) instead of face/animal AF it DOES NOT OVERHEAT at all with this mod. Still have to do more tests to verify but it's great news!

Incredile build and video quality!! I think you could have gone one step further and replace the plastic panel you conducted the heat to with a copper sheet, that should have solved the issue completely if im not mistaken, though yes you would have to cut into a 3000$ camera.

@Chuck if you're an R5 owner who is confident and competent enough to try this modification, why would you spend an extra grand when a small bit of copper plate and some thermal pads cost a tenner? And I'm pretty sure the price difference to the Cinema equivalent of the R5 will be much more than a grand.

I wonder if Canon, Nikon and Sony would consider making a heat sink attachment for their stills cameras so you can shoot high-res video as well. It would make things easier for people who shoot both stills and video and don't want to graduate to the cinema-oriented equipment.

Canon: Dang it, he exposed our poor designing. The overheating message on screen is a software thing. The overheating is obivously fake if the company is showing message on screen then clearly they knew that it's gonna heat up that's why that pop up is shown so no matter what you do the software qaa designed to stop recording after 20 minutes. That's why canon was able to fix it because of firmware update because it was a software stopping the recording issue. And that 2 hour time delay was reduced to 5 minutes by the canon company firmware. Not by you. You didn't messed around with software so there is no realistic way that camera is giving you 5 minutes delay but 2 hour delay to someone else.

  • Zeron Maccu

So not only is their cooling solution hot trash for a $4k camera, they limited it artificially in software which means their KNEW their cooling solution wasn't good enough. That along with how those thermal pads were installed is just next level incompetence.

Another fantastic video. Some really out of the box thinking. Does make me wonder why Canon is happy to release a product that is inferior with their R&D budget when such an easy (for them) fix could be possible. Makes me wonder what the ratio of stills-photographers to videographers buy these cameras, and I suspect there are far more of the latter than the manufacturers realise. The overheating issue isn't limited to the Canon either. All but the very latest Sony APS-C cameras suffer with this although I don't think there's enough room inside them to add an improvised heatsink.

I got into astrophotography. They build thermal peltier coolers on the camera. Cools the sensor down to - so takes out a lot of noise from the images. Dedicated Astro cams have them built in. Always shooting -10/15 but 5 to 10 minute exposure’s and a lot of them over days and weeks.

What a great mod. Even without the water you basically unbroke the camera. 40 min is perfectly usable in most use cases. I can't believe the pad contact they used, good on you for revealing poor manufacturing and software implementations on an otherwise good looking product. Hopefully this drives companies to fix such simple things like better engineering in crucial areas on launch.

Thing is it doesn't seem to need that much in the way of cooling. The only issue here is that it seems to have been designed to actively hinder it's cooling what with the placement of the DC board. That alone is WTF levels of bad design. I'm guessing the execs wanted it to have bad heat disipation to sell their more expensive cameras.

Canon's whole organisation failed. Marketing shouldn't have pitched it as an 8K camera in a small plastic body. Engineering should have designed it better. Failing that, it should have been caught in testing. They shouldn't have bodged the safety with a timer. They should have done a recall and changed the heat spreader and used a metal back plate, even if it made a loss on existing units already sold.
